Capitan Fanegas

What a name for a wine! You almost expect to be surrounded by soldiers or even imibibing with the man himself!

This superbly crafted Rioja is a joy. At the time of writing, a strong favourite of mine.

I am a big fan of Rioja, but am no snob about it. Cheap ones often give me a headache as I drink them, and for me the old expensive ones taste like something that has died making me wonder as to what is the point of drinking them.

What are called “young” Riojas are the ones that please me most.

A friend when introduced to Capitan Fanegas, described it as “like being snogged by a pissed Grape”, she was in instant awe and love of it. Normally her descriptions of wine are quite lengthy and inspired. This time though it surprised her so much with its depths she was almost speechless. Never had she tasted a Rioja like this and that is perhaps the point, neither have I.

The wine is robust without being heavy, round and full of Blackcurrant overtones. It is very moreish and drinkable, complimenting the usual foods associated with Riojas. Do serve at Cellar temperatures, rather than room temperature. Like all red wines it will open up and decanting it will make this happen faster.

The label is worth translating as it describes Capitan Fanegas……”protector of the wine makers. Indefatigable warrior, Hero, Villain, and Dreamer”.

At the time of writing it costs E25 in Spain in local wine shops.

Enjoy!
